When the refrigerator defrost button in the center of the temperature control knob is pressed, a lever is operated between the temperature control and the refrigerator defrost control which turns off the compressor and energizes the defrost heater. The heaters remain on a sufficient length of time for the evaporator to defrost.
Refrigerator Cycle
The refrigerating cycle of the principal components of refrigerators or freezers works as follows: When the cabinet temperature is above the required temperature of the automatic temperature control of the refrigerator, the operating control contacts close and start the refrigerator compressor. The compressor draws off the evaporated vapor from the refrigerator evaporator. This reduces the pressure on the liquid refrigerant which begins to boil and evaporate. During this process heat is absorbed from the refrigerator cabinet interior, whereupon the cabinet temperature begins to drop. The low-pressure vapor is drawn through the suction line into the refrigerator compressor where it is compressed and passed on to the condenser as a high-pressure vapor. As this high-pressure vapor (loaded with heat picked up from the cabinet interior, plus the heat from compression) passes through the coils of the condenser, it gives up heat to the cooling medium (the room air surrounding the condenser) and reverts to a high-pressure liquid. This liquid then passes through the filter-drier into the capillary tube, from which the refrigerant enters the refrigerator evaporator inlet tube. As it proceeds, there is a drop in pressure because of the frictional resistance of the small bore in the capillary tube. When it reaches the end of the tube, the refrigerant expands into the comparatively wider opening of the evaporator as a low-pressure liquid and immediately begins to evaporate. As it evaporates the liquid travels through the coils of the refrigerator evaporator, boils, and absorbs heat from the cabinet, again becoming a low-pressure vapor. Thus, the refrigerant has circulated completely through the system. This process continues and heat is removed from the refrigerator cabinet until its temperature drops to the required temperature of the temperature control.
When the required refrigeration temperature is reached, the refrigerator control contacts open and stop the refrigerator compressor. The refrigeration unit remains Off until the flow of heat that refrigeration the cabinet insulation raises the temperature of the refrigerator cabinet interior, whereupon the unit starts and a new refrigeration cycle begins.
